Fit-and-flare wedding dresses are one of the popular silhouette choices for brides. The style is fitted but then flares out at the bottom.

Other bridal gown silhouettes are: mermaid, ball gown, A-line and sheath. Finding out which silhouette works best to flatter your body takes a little time, but is the first step in figuring out which dress you will fall in love with in the end.

Once you know that the fit-and-flare style is your choice, then you can narrow down other features in the gown. There are so many variations from strapless to long sleeves, from illusion necklines to plunging v-necks. Your stylist can help you with this narrowing down until you find the dress.

And your options are limitless. We have hundreds of off-the-rack options, ones you can walk out of store with your dress in hand. Or you can order from our designers. Each of them have fit-and-flare dresses in your size.

Mermaid wedding gowns are cut - as the name implies - with a fitted top and a broad bottom section of the gown. Often brides will say they don’t think they’ll look good in a mermaid, but it can be very flattering.

Mermaid is one of the several wedding dress silhouettes - or styles. The others are fit and flare, sheath, A-line and ball gowns. Sometimes the lines between these are not easily distinguishable.

When you go dress shopping, it’s important to first pick out what silhouette you like. And don’t be surprised if the dress you came in thinking you loved, isn’t the one you love on. Once you have in mind what you like the style, then you can go on to choose the dress itself.

Sheath bridal gowns are one of the silhouettes that wedding dresses are divided into. The other silhouettes (or styles) are mermaid, ball gowns, A-lines. Sheath is very similar to a fit-and-flare, and the terms are often used interchangeable.

But we suggest that before deciding on the length of your dress, you need to envision what your ceremony will be like. Traditionally, short gowns - whether tea length or short - are considered more for informal ceremonies. Are you getting married in a backyard? A beach? A courthouse? A party with just a few close friends and family? But they can be worn in any occasion or setting.

Another trend we’ve been seeing is brides buying short wedding dresses as a dress to change into during the reception. Or they pick one to wear when leaving the reception.
